Patagonia's Footprint Chronicles allow customers to track the environmental impact of ten different Patagonia products from design through delivery. You can see where the product's raw materials come from and even the factory where the products are constructed. In addition, the site lists the distance traveled, total CO2 emissions, waste produced, and energy consumed for each product.
For example, the Vitaliti Strappy Dress was designed in Ventura California and uses fibers from Turkey and Japan. It is sewn in Thailand and then shipped to Patagonia's distribution warehouse in Nevada.
The distance the dress travels is equal to circumnavigating the moon 2.5 times. The CO2 emitted is 46 times the weight of the dress. The energy used is equal to leaving a flourescent light bulb on for 78 days (24 hours a day).
Wow.
And this is from an environmentally aware company.
Be sure and check out the Footprint Chronicles for yourself. You can also see what other customers are saying on Patagonia's Cleanest Line blog.
