Winter Storm Landon restoration recap

It was all hands on deck (poles, phones, computers…) for Winter Storm Landon which interrupted power to a total of 233,640 MLGW customers. It will go down as the third worst storm in MLGW history, behind the Ice Storm of 1994 and the Tom Lee Storm of 2017.

Eighty-nine contract crews from Illinois, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky and Oklahoma joined 78 tree trimming and 72 MLGW crews (overhead/service/underground/troubleshooters) for the 11-day restoration. Despite freezing temperatures, significant storm-related debris, and extensive equipment damage hampering the process, crews worked 16-hour shifts to get the job done.

Employees in the Customer Care Center worked 24 hours a day to answer tens of thousands of calls, the Interactive Social and Media Relations team answered tens of thousands of messages from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and NextDoor in addition to fielding media requests, planning press conferences, and crafting news releases and social media messaging.

The Stores team, working behind-the-scenes, kicks into high gear in response to outages working 16-hour days at the North Service Center and Hickory Hill to supply materials to our electric crews and contractors. Here are just some of the things Primary Stores NSC 85 does to help prepape restoration crews. They pull storm kits out of storage to have ready to load as soon as contractors pull into the work center. Stores communicates with Purchasing about materials that are low on inventory, so they can quickly procure whatever is needed for our crews. Our Stores Receiving area begins getting materials in and works with the Material Engineers to get materials inspected quickly and put into stock. “There are a lot of moving parts during a storm and our Stores team pulls together to work with these different areas to make things run smoothly,” says Supervisor Nancy Miller.

These are just a few examples of the work that must be done during restoration.
