#SheCanSTEM: Meet Shleah Whitlock

MLGW has 2770 employees; 752 (27%) are women. Of the 752 women, 143 (19%) hold STEM positions. On the second Tuesday of every month, we will introduce you to a different woman working in STEM at MLGW.

Shleah Whitlock graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in electrical engineering from Lamar University. She works in the Street Light Engineering Department at MLGW as a Streetlight Engineer Level 2. She says her dad inspired her to study electrical engineering and credits him for teaching her problem solving skills and helping her understand distribution and instrumentation through hands-on projects.

We asked Shleah a few questions to get to know her better.

What do you do in your current position?
My job is assisting customers who are in need of additional streetlights along their street.

What's interesting or cool about what you do?

What I enjoy is having the opportunity to meet new customers and design the additional lighting for their area.

Why would you encourage girls to pursue STEM careers?

For the knowledge and the direction that STEM offers. With knowledge and understanding, the world is full of opportunities to use the knowledge that you've obtained to apply for careers.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Never doubt yourself on what you can or can't do. Never let fear stop you from accomplishing your dreams. Have full confidence that you can do anything.
