MLGW, BBB Issue Warning About Spoof Emails

MLGW and the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South are warning consumers and companies to be aware of fake emails.

Scammers are sending fake company emails, pretending to be executives, to trick recipients into initiating unauthorized bank transfers. The spoofs are examples of what the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a warning about last August.

The FBI said there was a spike in victims and dollar losses from a scam in which crooks spoofed an executive’s email account at the victim’s firm to dupe the employee into initiating an unauthorized international wire transfer.

Consumers and companies are urged to use extreme caution upon receipt of any suspicious emails and to contact local authorities.
