MLGW Advierte Sobre Estafas Dirigidas a Clientes que Hablan Español

MLGW ha recibido reportes de un nuevo tipo de estafa dirigida a clientes de habla hispana. Los clientes están recibiendo llamadas teléfonicas en español diciéndoles erróneamente que sus pagos de servicio público no han sido recibidos. Luego el estafador le informa al cliente que los servicios serán suspendidos en 15 minutos a menos que salga a comprar tarjetas de regalo y coloque grandes sumas de dinero en las mismas. Acto seguido, le provee al cliente un número de teléfono para que retorne la llamada una vez que haya comprado las tarjetas, y solicita que el pago se realice con las tarjetas.

Quien llama también ha dicho a los clientes que los medidores de servicio no están funcionando correctamente y que se les está cobrando más de lo debido. Luego el estafador le promete al cliente un reembolso. Así mismo le dice al cliente que un programa gubernamental le ayudará a pagar la factura después de que el cliente realice el pago con la tarjeta de regalo.

MLGW reporta que a la fecha ha recibido aproximadamente 15 llamadas relacionadas con esta estafa, todas de clientes que hablan español. Los clientes que consideren que han sido víctimas de esta o cualquier otra estafa deben contactar a MLGW al 544-6549.

MLGW Warns of Scams Targeting Spanish-Speaking Customers

MLGW has received reports of a new scam that targets Spanish-speaking customers. The customers are receiving calls in Spanish that falsely tell the customers that utility payments have not been received and that the customer is subject to cutoff. The scammer instructs the customer to purchase gift cards to be used as utility payments. The scammer also provides the customer with a phone number to call back once the customer has purchased the cards, then requests that payment be made with the cards.

Other claims the scammer has reportedly made:

* The customer’s meter is not working properly, that they are being overcharged, and that they will receive a refund.

* That a government program will help pay the customer’s bill after the gift card payment is made
