One of my co-workers stopped me in the hall today and excitedly told me that he rode the MATA Express to work this morning. Apparently there's a park & ride at the Wal-Mart near Wolfchase (Stage Road & Brunswick) where you can board the bus and go directly downtown.
My co-worker said it took thirty-seven minutes to get downtown, and because there were only four people on the bus (one of whom is a MATA executive), the driver practically delivered each person to the door of their office building.
He says the bus was on time and that he was very impressed with the service. He plans to take the MATA express at least three times a week, and relax while someone else does the driving. Other benefits include saving $33-$75 in gas per month, reduced wear and tear on his vehicle, and cleaner air for the community.
Roundtrip fare for the Wolfchase MATA Express is $4.20. The return bus leaves the North Terminal at 5:00pm. For more information, visit MATA's website. (There are two other Express routes, one for Whitehaven and one for Southeast Memphis.)
Another co-worker of mine says she rode the MATA Express about 30 years ago and remembers how friendly she and the other regular passengers got to be with each other. "Back then" she said, "there were three different routes in the morning and the afternoon."
Hopefully as the MATA Express starts to fill up, more routes will be added to accommodate different work schedules.
