Wharton announces $6 million federal grant for utility assistance
Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton today announced a federal grant of nearly $6 million to assist county residents in paying their utility bills.
“These are not for folks with cutoff notices,” Wharton said during a press conference at the Shelby County Administration Building. “We’re going to be able to help folks before they get that cutoff notice.”
The federal grant is meant to help those who make between $600 and $900 a month.
Starting Monday, the Shelby County Community Services Agency will begin setting appointments to determine eligibility for utility assistance.
Residents can call the Raleigh office at 380-3756 or the Kirby office at 362-6518 to make an appointment.
