Survey: Memphis posts lowest water and sewer costs in the nation
Water costs are rising nationwide, but Memphis enjoys the lowest combined water and sewer costs in the country, according to an annual survey of 51 markets by NUS Consulting Group, an energy and telecommunications consulting company.
Memphis’ water and sewer cost is $2.43 per 1,000 gallons, the lowest in the nation despite an 8.9% rise from last year.
Chicago is the second least expensive at $2.81 per thousand gallons, followed by Greenville, Miss. ($2.92), El Paso, Texas ($3.56) and Biloxi, Miss. ($3.98).
Seattle had the highest combined water and sewer costs at $14.28 per thousand gallons, up 5.1% from last year.
Atlanta was the second most expensive at $13.28 per thousand gallons, followed by Boston ($12.96), San Francisco ($12.76) and Portland, Maine ($11.67).
The average price for just water rose 7.3% nationwide.
Boston had the most expensive water at $5.76 per thousand gallons. Savannah, Ga., had the cheapest water in the country at $1.09 per thousand gallons.
