The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has compiled a list of ten myth-busters to help separate energy savings fact from energy wasting fiction.
MYTHBUSTING FACT #4: Turn down the thermostat while you're away from the house for the day. If you are out for a good stretch of time (say 8 hours or so), this temperature "set-back" will save more energy than it will take to bring your home back to the desired temperature. (Note: If you have a heat pump, make sure you have a heat pump thermostat that has been properly programmed.)
It's true, it's true, it's true! This is definitely a question I hear a lot. But, there's no wonder why people think it isn't true, especially when popular How-To sites don't even get it right! (Shame on you eHow!)
The best way to control your home's heating and cooling is with a programmable thermostat. They cost about $35 and are worth every penny!
