Sharp, which manufactures solar panels at its Memphis plant, has installed a 50-kW solar array that is visible from Raines Road, east of Mendenhall. The panels are mounted on stands with a southern exposure for maximum generation potential. While the area was heavily damaged by the February tornado and reconstruction in the property continues, the solar array was undamaged.
Memphis Botanic Garden installed a 10-kW solar array on the roof of its new horitculture building in 2006. The system generates a portion of the electricity used in the building and the generation credits received are re-invested for energy improvements at the facility.
