You can’t see it and you can’t smell it, but its effects can be deadly. An odorless, colorless gas, carbon monoxide is often called the Silent Killer. During cold weather months, the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning rises because windows and doors that would allow trapped gases to escape are closed. Improper operation of natural gas appliances, blocked fireplace chimneys, clogged burners and other problems can lead to carbon monoxide omissions. Compounded with the inability to detect carbon monoxide by sight or smell, are symptoms of poisoning which mimic the flu: headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and mental confusion. Anyone exhibiting these symptoms should leave the residence immediately, call MLGW’s emergency number (528-4465), and seek medical attention.
There are steps you can take to prevent exposure to carbon monoxide:Choose appliances that vent fumes to the outside whenever possible.
1. Have gas appliances professionally inspected annually.
2. Install an Underwriters Laboratory (UL) approved carbon monoxide detector.
3. Don’t use a gas oven to heat your home.
If you suspect a gas leak or there are indicators that a gas appliance isn’t working properly (yellow gas flame, floating or wavering flame, soot, or overheating) call MLGW’s emergency number, 528-4465.
